Traveling light is a great way to start your kicked back Hawaiian vacation. These 6 packing tips have been tried and tested during our numerous trips to the islands over the years. The best part is you can easily fit everything in a carry on, you may even have room to spare.
Good news: You won’t need to bring beach towels. We provide plenty of big soft beach towels…more room for those extra bathing suits and maybe a new pair of slippas.
1. Bathing suits – Yes, more than one is good especially if you are the kind of person that enjoys two or more bay or beach events per day. No need to pass up a dip in the aqua blue, warm water when you’ve always got a dry suit with you.
2. Shorts, tank tops, sundresses – Hawaii island is very casual, even for a night out you only need your best shorts and tees. Comfort is king on the island.
3. Hat and cover ups – The sparkling Hawaiian days make for bright sunshine so be sure to have a good hat that will work in a breeze and a sun shirt for out on the water or on land. A pareo or other lightweight cover up is handy for the beach and for the occasional cool evening.
4. Slippas (aka flip flops) – We live in these. We have gone all over the island in them. For fancy events all you need to do is hose off the salt water and they are ready. Just remember “no wear in house”.
5. Refillable water bottle – You won’t need to buy a case of plastic water bottles when you arrive. We have filtered water for you to refill your bottles. Plus, you will get the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to reduce island waste.
6. Reef Safe Sunscreen – Hawaii is the first state in the US to ban the sale of sunscreen containing the coral-harming chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, ushering in a new era of reef safe sunscreen. The law goes into effect in 2021 but why not start now. Here’s a list of safe sunscreeens.
