Sustainable Tourism has been a popular concept in the travel media lately. We are glad to see this, as it is important to many travelers. At Dolphin Bay Vacation Rentals, we are committed to protecting and caring for the environment through the use of earth-friendly materials and best practices. We believe it is especially important to care for the land and sea because we are located so close to Kealakekua Bay, a one-of-a-kind Marine Sanctuary.
To help preserve the myriad marine species in the bay (dolphins, whales, green turtles, several species of coral, and the endangered Monk Seal) we use only eco-friendly products on our property. These green products are good for the bay, the bees, our guests, our neighborhood and the crystal clear waters of the bay. We use only organic fertilizers and natural pest management products.
What about our power source? It is the sun! In 2012, we installed solar panels on the roof of Dolphin Bay House to supply power to both the House and the Cottage. We are proud to be harnessing the Hawaiian sun to produce nearly all the power needed. No guilt for using the AC in the cottage!
We purchased our Hawaiian home in 2003 and after careful planning, renovated the house in 2007. We found locally milled Eucalyptus for flooring, Bamboo cabinets for the kitchen and reused a slab of Koa wood for the kitchen bar. We used as many environmentally friendly appliances and products as we could.
Another important aspect of Sustainable Tourism is educating our guests about marine conservation in Hawaii. The incredible natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands is not to be taken for granted. Preservation of the coral reefs and marine life are ongoing efforts among private organizations, State and Federal agencies. Visitors are asked for their kokua (cooperation) in learning and practicing what needs to be done to protect the land and sea.
Contributing to the local economy is also essential to Sustainable Tourism. We hire local staff and source local supplies whenever possible. We promote local stores, farmers’ markets, restaurants and attractions to support the local economy.
Being eco-friendly is another reason you can feel good about staying at Dolphin Bay Vacation Rentals. Please follow us on Facebook @dolphinbayvacationrentalshawaii for more news on conservation, the environment and Sustainable Tourism.
